At Surrey Place we help children and adults living with developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and visual impairments reach their full potential. We offer a variety of groups and workshops for clients, families and caregivers, as well as extensive education and consultation services to community agencies.
Our comprehensive programs and services range from assessment, diagnosis, and one-on-one treatment, to family counselling and group support and is provided by a broad network of clinicians and professionals. Surrey Place is accredited with Accreditation Canada and is affiliated with the University of Toronto and other academic institutions and is a teaching site for students in a variety of health care professions.
Surrey Place employs nearly 500 employees, with 12 locations in the GTA and we also provide video-conferencing services to communities in northwestern Ontario.
Position Background:
Surrey Place was recently approved to receive Ministry of Health funding through an Alternate Payment Plan (APP). This funding will not only address the significant unmet needs for individuals living with an Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD), but also expand service provision while decreasing wait-times and creating additional capacity.
To begin this exciting journey, Surrey Place has a number of opportunities for those who are interested in working with the IDD population and building further health human resources (HHR) capacity across Ontario.

Position Summary:
This position will involve clinical consultation to Primary Care Physicians from a region in Toronto, in an outpatient clinic setting. The patient population are primarily adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), complex physical health and mental health issues, and behaviours that are challenging. It will involve interdisciplinary work with other specialists in IDD, and other health professionals from Surrey Place.
This position will report to the Chief of Medical Staff at Surrey Place.
Main Responsibilities:
- Outpatient consultation for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical & mental health and behavioural issues
- Mentoring primary care physicians in a shared care model to provide care for adults with IDD
- Advocating and building capacity in regional family health teams, Community Health Centres, Hospitals and Ontario Health Teams, and interested family practice units
- Clinical administrative activities
- Responsibility for education opportunities with medical and nursing students, residents, and practicing clinicians, and other capacity building activities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Fully trained in Family Medicine with specialty training in the care of individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
- Holds an MD, MBBS or the equivalent designation.
- Preferably at least 2 years’ experience as a practicing physician working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- The successful candidate will be eligible for an academic appointment at the University of Toronto.
- Superior relationship building ability and leadership in fostering a positive and supportive organizational culture.
- Ability to bring teams together in a collaborative manner and support on-going cohesiveness in a complex and dynamic environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral, communication skills when interacting with clients, staff, community members.
- Effective organizational, critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills
- Experience working with culturally diverse and marginalized populations.
- Demonstrated experience in program leadership and development.
- Able to communicate proficiently in English. Proficiency in communicating in a second language is an asset
- The successful candidate must provide an acceptable Police Records Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Other relevant information:
- Candidates must hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Family Physicians of Canada
- Renumeration will be from clinical OHIP Billings and a stipend per day, for time needed for clinical non OHIP billable and capacity building activities.
