Preclerkship Exploration in Developmental Disabilities (1st and 2nd year medical students )
This six week elective, for 1st year and 2nd year University of Toronto medical students, provides an overview of the interdisciplinary supports needed for people living with developmental disability and autism spectrum disorder.
The curriculum provides an introduction to developmental disability and autism spectrum disorder; examines the physical health issues and reviews assessment needs for people with development disabilities; addresses the diverse communication, hearing, vision and mental health issues that this population may face and examines the role physicians may plan in accessing community supports and advocacy. Students will receive some training and access to the Tools for the Primary Care of People with Development Disabilities.

Transition to Residency Half Day Teaching
Surrey Place provides a half day of teaching to undergraduate medical trainees in their final year (transition to residency). The goal of this teaching is to provide students with the necessary tools to provide care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder. The teaching has two primary objectives:
1) Consent and Communication
- To understand the importance of obtaining consent when working with clients with developmental disabilities and tools that facilitate the process of obtaining consent
- To learn appropriate and effective ways to communicate with patients with a developmental disability and how these may differ depending on severity of the disability.
2) Approaches to Assessment
- To understand the importance of modifying clinical environments and approaches to respect the physical, sensory and emotional needs of the client
- To approach challenging behaviours as a method of communication in clients with developmental disabilities
- To engage in an interdisciplinary approach to the care of adults and children with developmental disabilities
