Prior to starting in intensive services ( IBI) within Toronto Autism Services at The Etobicoke Children’s Centre (ECC), Ella was attending Silvercreek Nursery School in their preschool room. At the initial Service planning/Agreement meeting Grace (Ella’s mother) reported great gains in both her social and vocal language skills. Daycare staff reported success with peer interactions, transitioning to other settings, and expanding on food variety. Ella has since moved into the school age room.
At the service agreement meeting Grace expressed a keen interest in the IBI spot as she was aware the intensive service would be important for Ella, however, was hesitant to give up the spot with typical peers especially since she had seen such great success. Silvercreek Nursery school was a half day afternoon program. The IBI clinical team worked closely with Silvercreek School staff to arrive at a schedule that met Ella’s and the family’s needs and further did not compromise intensity of learning in both settings.
Grace was very happy with the outcome and noted that she felt heard and it felt like she “got the best of both worlds”.
