How to Consider “Developmental Age” When Teaching Your Child with FASD

Understanding “Developmental Age” when teaching your child with FASD

* Published on February 22, 2021

Your child with FASD may act and/or think “younger” than other kids their age. Consider this “developmental age” when teaching your child new skills. This will help reduce frustration for your child and for yourself.

Tips

  • Focus on what your child CAN do
    • Not what they can’t do or what isn’t working
    • Before teaching a new skill, start with something they are good at
  • Give them responsibilities, set up opportunities, where they will be successful
    • They must have positive experiences to build confidence
    • Without confidence, they may lack motivation later on, to try, to put in effort
  • Let other adults in their lives know what your own expectations are for your child
    • This is an effective way of removing barriers for your child
