Mental health support for young people with autism
How to register:
1 hour per session | $225 per session
Children and teens with autism often experience mental health challenges such as social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or depression. In these counselling sessions, children and youth explore their feelings, address daily challenges, develop self-awareness, and work towards overall happiness and success. Your counsellor may use techniques such as cognitive reframing, relaxation and stress-reduction, role-playing, and home tasks.
Who we support
Children and youth ages 8–17 with autism
A single session costs $225 and are typically purchased in packages of four.
Child and teen counselling may be appropriate if your child:
- Is between the ages of 8 and 18, has an autism diagnosis
- Consents to participate in the service
- Is informed and motivated to engage in counselling
- Can actively participate in 1-to-1 counselling sessions
- Has sufficient language abilities to engage in a meaningful back-and-forth conversation
You can use your Ontario Autism Program (OAP) funding to pay for this service, including AccessOAP funding, Childhood Budgets, and Interim One-Time Funding. You can also pay out-of-pocket or use other sources like external philanthropic support, community-based funding programs or private insurance.
Each counselling session is one hour long and tailored to your child’s concerns. Your child and their counsellor will start with a consultation to explore issues, determine priorities, and inform a treatment plan. In the following sessions, your therapist and child will start by discussing updates relevant to counseling. They may also review any skill-building activities your child was assigned to do at home.
The therapist may use techniques such as cognitive reframing, relaxation, stress reduction, and role-playing to support behaviour change and to build confidence. They may also share information using written materials, visual aids, and short videos.
At the end of each session, the therapist will review the main issues discussed and outline the next actions.
