  3. W-Sitting: Encouraging Healthy Sitting Positions

W-Sitting: Encouraging Healthy Sitting Positions

JULY 24, 2026
W-sitting is a common sitting position in toddlers and young children where the knees bend inward and the legs form a "W" shape. While moving in and out of this position occasionally is normal, spending long periods W-sitting may be associated with challenges related to core strength, muscle tightness, and coordinated movement. This guide explains why children choose this position, introduces alternative sitting styles, and offers fun ways to build strength and movement skills during everyday play.

Understanding W-Sitting

Learn what W-sitting looks like, why many young children naturally choose this position, and when frequent W-sitting may be a concern.

Encourage Alternative Sitting Positions

Discover simple ways to promote a variety of floor sitting positions, including ring sitting, long sitting, side sitting, and criss-cross sitting, to support healthy movement and posture.

Create Supportive Seating Options

Learn how child-sized chairs or stools can encourage more varied sitting positions throughout the day.

Build Strength Through Play

Explore fun activities such as climbing, hopping, jumping, yoga, Twister, and active games that help develop core strength, balance, and coordination.

When to Seek Professional Guidance

Understand when persistent W-sitting or concerns about your child's movement and development should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
