Expanding Access to Flexible Clinical Services
Surrey Place continued to evolve its paid services to provide families with greater flexibility, choice, and timely access to specialized clinical care. By expanding how services are delivered and introducing new programming, Surrey Place has increased opportunities for clients and caregivers to access supports that are better tailored to their individual needs.
A significant milestone was the expansion of virtual Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) services for 1-to-1 and groups, creating new opportunities for families facing barriers to in-person participation or living in remote communities. We also provided families with technology loans if they did not have access to a computer or electronic device. Both group and individualized programming enabled participants to build communication, social, employment, daily living, and behavioural skills in a flexible virtual environment.
Building on this commitment to greater accessible care, Surrey Place also expanded its Home and Community-Based ABA services, bringing individualized supports directly into homes and local communities. By delivering services directly to where children and families live, learn, and participate, clinicians tailored interventions to strengthen communication, daily living skills, safety, behaviour management, and community participation.
We also experienced significant growth in multidisciplinary group programming, bringing together expertise from psychology, social work, ABA, and occupational therapy. Through engaging, activity-based programs including art, cooking, movement, and play-based learning, clients, and caregivers were able to develop practical skills while building confidence, strengthening relationships, and supporting mental wellbeing in collaborative, supportive environments.
Launching Recreational Respite Services
This year, Surrey Place expanded its continuum of care with the launch of recreational respite Services, providing caregivers with reliable, flexible support while their children participate in engaging, developmentally appropriate programming. Respite Services is open to children with autism, developmental disabilities, other support needs, as well as their siblings. The program offers a balance of structured and recreational activities, including arts and crafts, sensory play, group games, indoor gym time, and story time, in a safe, inclusive environment where children can build skills, develop friendships, and have fun.
The introduction of respite services responds directly to a need consistently identified by families. Access to dependable respite can be limited, yet it plays a vital role in supporting caregiver wellbeing and strengthening family resilience. We recognize this, and are proud to help caregivers take a well-deserved break while ensuring their children continue to benefit from meaningful, supportive experiences. The launch reflects Surrey Place's commitment to evolving its services in response to community needs and strengthening a family-centred continuum of care.
Investing in Advanced Clinical Expertise
Surrey Place continued its multi-year investment in Practical Functional Assessment and Skill-Based Treatment (PFA/SBT), an evidence-informed approach that supports children, youth, and adults with autism and developmental disabilities who experience complex behavioural challenges. Over the past two years, 43 staff achieved Level 4 credentialing, while three clinicians advanced to Level 6, enabling them to provide in-house training, coaching, and ongoing credentialing opportunities for colleagues.
PFA/SBT shifts the focus from managing behaviour to understanding its underlying purpose, recognizing that behaviour is often a form of communication. Grounded in the principles of safety, dignity, respect, and transparency, the approach helps individuals build meaningful communication, coping, and self-regulation skills while fostering trusting relationships with clinicians and caregivers.
As Surrey Place continues implementing PFA/SBT across programs, staff report that the training has fundamentally changed the way they approach their work. By providing a more compassionate, trauma-informed framework for supporting individuals, many of whom have experienced trauma, the approach is increasing clinical confidence, promoting diversity in clinical expertise and enhancing the quality of care for clients and families.
Expanding Community Partnerships
Surrey Place’s Partner Solutions continued to evolve its work beyond developmental services this year, expanding partnerships and bringing specialized supports into community, education, and wellness environments. These initiatives reflect a growing commitment to meeting communities where they are and adapting services to the unique needs and diverse contexts of the communities we serve.
A key example was the partnership with Humber College to support one of their students enrolled in a post-secondary program experiencing significant stress due to managing school alongside a medical condition. Through this collaboration, Surrey Place provided coordinated behavioural supports, including a support worker and Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA), helping the student remain engaged and successfully complete their coursework. This targeted, time-limited intervention highlights the value of flexible, in-situ supports that enable participation and success in inclusive education settings.
Partner Solutions also continued its work with Northern communities through a partnership with Lac Seul First Nation, providing wrap-around interprofessional services to students across three schools: Obishikokaang Elementary School in Frenchman’s Head, Waninitawingaang Memorial School in Kejick Bay, and Morris Thomas Memorial Christian School in Whitefish Bay. A multidisciplinary team of clinicians, including behaviour therapy professionals, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, social workers, psychometrists, and clinical psychology professionals, collaborated with school staff and caregivers to support students’ participation and engagement in services. Supports were delivered both virtually and through in-person clinical visits to Lac Seul.
Additionally, Partner Solutions advanced community-based and wellness-focused programming designed to promote connection, engagement, and emotional well-being for neurodivergent individuals. These emerging initiatives reflect Surrey Place’s continued evolution toward flexible, community-based models of support that promote connection, participation, and belonging.
Strengthening Organizational Sustainability
Throughout 2025–2026, philanthropy played an important role in strengthening Surrey Place's long-term sustainability while creating opportunities for greater inclusion, connection, and community impact. Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, funders, volunteers, and community partners, Surrey Place continued to invest in initiatives that respond to immediate needs while building a stronger foundation for the future.
This year also marked the launch of Surrey Place's Annual Giving Campaign, one of the organization's first strategic fundraising campaigns in many years. Alongside expanded donor engagement and stewardship efforts, the campaign helped strengthen a culture of philanthropy, engage new supporters, and build momentum for future fundraising and community investment.
Philanthropic support also sustained initiatives that enrich the lives of individuals and families, including celebrating the first anniversary of the Community Pantry, marking the 20th anniversary of the Symphonic Passion Chorus, and hosting the second annual Speak Up for FASD event to advance awareness, advocacy, and understanding. Through a growing network of community partnerships, Surrey Place also expanded inclusive opportunities for clients and families to participate in arts, culture, and community experiences.
Together, these achievements demonstrate how philanthropy and community partnerships are helping Surrey Place build a more sustainable future while creating meaningful opportunities for the people and families we serve.
