ABILITY Program @ SickKids
In partnership with Surrey Place, ABILITY @ SickKids (Adaptive Behavioural Intellectual & Developmental Disability Integrated Tertiary Treatment for Children and Youth) offers both in-patient and ambulatory care to children and youth with ISDD/ASD requiring tertiary care at SickKids. Our interprofessional team comprises of paediatricians, a developmental paediatrician, nursing, Board-Certified Behavioural Analysts, service coordinator, developmental consultant and a program coordinator.
Our team brings a developmental, behavioural approach to care which requires specialized, individualized and adaptive care to improve health outcomes. Program criteria includes: Child/Youth with IDD/ASD requiring medical care at SickKids and one of 4 indications:
- Behavioural challenges impacting the ability to provide medically necessary care at SickKids and requiring adaptive care
- Behavioural escalation leading to significant health impact or family crisis resulting in high risk of hospital visits
- Developmental, functional or behavioural regression
- Infant, children with Down syndrome with medical complexity requiring consultation
We expect our patients to maintain close contact with their regular family doctor/paediatrician as ABILITY @ SickKids is a consultation service and does not provide primary care services.
Each appointment is 60-90 minutes.
Child or youth with intellectual disability or autism spectrum disorder requiring tertiary care at SickKids and 1 of 4 indications: Behavioural challenges impacting access to care, behavioural escalation leading to more healthcare visits, developmental or behavioural regression, infant or child with Down syndrome that has medical complexity requiring consultative support.
