Autism Across Generations: Exploring the Mental Health, Camouflaging, and Lived Experiences of Autistic Adolescents with Autistic Parents
Melissa Lazo, Ph.D. Candidate in the School and Applied Child Psychology program at the University of British Columbia (UBC), is conducting two research studies.
The 2 studies are part of doctoral dissertation, titled Autism Across Generations: Exploring the Mental Health, Camouflaging, and Lived Experiences of Autistic Adolescents with Autistic Parents, supervised by Dr. Thomas Schanding.
The aim of this research is to better understand the experiences of autistic adolescents living with an autistic parent.
Study 1: Mental health and masking in autistic adolescents and youth ages 13-21
Looking for autistic adolescents/youth ages 13 to 21 and their caregivers to participate in an online survey study on mental health and masking.
The study will involve a 15-20 minute survey for the adolescent to complete and a 10 minute survey for a parent to complete. Prior to completing the surveys, both the parent and adolescent participant will need to schedule a brief 5-minute Zoom video call to verify their identities, review consent forms, and answer any questions. To thank you for your time, families will be eligible to win one of 10 $50CAD e-gift cards.

Study 2: Exploring the lived experiences of autistic adolescents and youth living with an autistic parent
Looking for autistic adolescents/youth ages 13 to 21 and their autistic caregiver (self-diagnosis accepted) living in Canada to participate in an online interview study to better understand autistic adolescents’ perspectives and the dynamics of neurodivergent families.
The study will involve a 45-60 minute online Zoom interview between the adolescent and the researcher. Questions will explore topics like autistic identity, daily life, and interactions with their parents. A 5-minute demographic questionnaire will be completed by a parent prior to the interview. To thank you for your time, participating families will receive a $25CAD e-gift card.
