Program Details

Is your teen ready to increase peer and friendship skills and roleplay complex social challenges in a welcoming group environment? If yes, PEERS® is right for you! Over the course of 12 weeks, teens with autism practice interacting positively with peers, making phone calls, using humour appropriately, and responding to teasing, disagreements, rumours, gossip and peer pressure.

This service includes educational sessions for caregivers, to help you support your child in maintaining their new skills. One-to-one support is available at an extra cost for children who require frequent breaks outside of the group, have difficulty regulating emotions such as frustration or worry, or to maintain safety (e.g. seizure protocol).

Sample Goals

The type of goals your teen may target in this group include:

  • Identifying steps to trade information in a two-way conversation
  • Identifying rules for electronic communication (e.g. voicemail, text, IM, email, phone)
  • Identifying good times and places to make friends
  • Learning how to tell if you are accepted or rejected from a friend group
  • Identifying and dealing with teasing, bullying, rumours and gossip


  • OAP funding (childhood budgets, interim one-time funding)

  • Private insurance



Your teen might benefit from this group if they:

  • Can have back and forth conversations, including asking and answering questions and making comments.
  • Have a typical classroom placement (working at grade level).
  • Are interested in making friends, socializing with peers and may have one or more friends already.
  • Can sit for a 15-30 min lesson.


Your teen may not be eligible if they:

  • Cannot have back and forth conversations, including asking and answering questions and making comments.
  • Are not interested in making friends or socializing.
  • Frequently harm themselves, harm others or destroy objects when upset. For long standing risky behaviours, consider 1-to-1 Focused Behavioural Intervention. For new or escalating, high-risk behaviour, Urgent Response Services may be appropriate.

How It Works

ABA Group Therapy is designed like swimming lessons. Some children progress quickly through the levels, while others repeat a level several times to work on or reinforce a goal. Sometimes, clinicians may recommend repeating a service. Caregivers can also sign their child up for the same level again if they feel they have more to gain from the curriculum.
