Research Ethics

Surrey Place recognizes that research is an essential component of the provision and enhancement of supports and clinical services provided to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The purpose of Surrey Place’s Research Ethics Board is to ensure: (a) that all research which requires the involvement of Surrey Place clients, their families or staff is scientifically sound and meets the highest ethical standards in all phases of the research; and (b) that safeguards are developed providing the greatest protection to clients, professionals and all other members of the community who serve as research participants. The board aims to protect the rights and well-being of Surrey Place clients, their families, and staff, as well as the interests of researchers.

The Research Ethics Board operates in accordance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, the standards of the professions represented on the Board, the standards reflected in the bioethics literature, and personal and community values.

Approval from the Surrey Place Research Ethics Board is required before a research project can commence. If you are  submitting a proposal, please read the Instructions for Investigators, the Delegated Review Criteria, and the  Guidelines for Consent before proceeding.

If you are a researcher who is not an employee of Surrey Place please visit the Collaborating With Us section for more information.

Please note:

1. All applications must include the Research Planning Form along with the SP Application for Studies Form.
2. Applications from external researchers must include a Surrey Place staff member as an investigator or sponsor.
