“My name is Tina Gandhi, and I am the social worker for the TRE-ADD program. My role is to provide support, coping strategies, and reduce stress for families of children with significant developmental and behavioural issues who have difficulty managing at home. My day-to-day work involves counselling families who share how their couple and sibling relationships have been impacted, and their biggest fears for the future. Many families have been open about their suicidal thoughts. As the families are from diverse cultural backgrounds, I utilize a non-judgmental approach, validating and understanding their initial hesitancy and worry about sharing their emotions.
My favourite part of working at Surrey Place is making a difference in our clients’ lives. By meeting families’ needs in a compassionate manner, the families feel more supported. They can begin making changes in their self-care, using coping strategies and considering long-term options. Seeing their changes and growth is the most rewarding part of the job and keeps me motivated and passionate about the work I do!”
